  • Relapse Prevention & Skill Development: Guide clients in developing and implementing effective relapse prevention strategies; teach essential coping skills for managing triggers, stress, and cravings.

  • Clinical Documentation: Maintain precise, timely, and confidential client records adhering strictly to HIPAA, federal confidentiality regulations specific to substance use (42 CFR Part 2), state requirements, and professional ethical standards.
  • Ethical & Legal Compliance: Practice with unwavering adherence to the NAADAC (National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors) Code of Ethics, applicable state licensing/certification board regulations, 42 CFR Part 2 confidentiality rules, and all relevant laws.
  • Client Communication: Foster a supportive therapeutic alliance through clear, empathetic, and professional communication regarding treatment goals, progress, and expectations.
  • Direct Fee Management: Set your professional fees for counseling services and manage the billing and payment process directly with your clients.

Requirements:

  • Legal & Ethical Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2 (stringent confidentiality for addiction treatment records) , state laws governing addiction counselors and telehealth, and the NAADAC Code of Ethics.
  • Professional Liability Insurance: Maintain active professional liability (malpractice) insurance that covers your scope of practice as an addiction counselor.
  • Skills:
    • Proficient addiction-specific assessment and treatment planning abilities.
    • Strong individual counseling skills tailored to addiction recovery.
    • Solid knowledge base of addiction models, recovery pathways, and relapse prevention.
    • Excellent interpersonal communication, active listening, and empathy.
    • Cultural sensitivity and competence.
    • Dependability, strong organizational skills, and firm ethical boundaries.
